The Designer assists with digital and print design as well as production for the Colgate University Communications department.
Accountable for creating high quality visual communications and accessible designs that engage relevant audiences, including campus students, faculty and staff, as well as prospective students, alumni and University supporters, and the general public.
Accountable for conceptualization, and the design of various print materials, websites, emails, mobile apps, and other communications and marketing initiatives.
Responsible for design and production of cross-platform creative communications, delivering content on time, within budget, and according to established visual standards.
Provides input on visual work of colleagues and works collaboratively as part of a team.
Content Creation and Production
Demonstrated ability to design and produce high quality visual communications for all communication platforms. Ability to create data visualization and information graphics. Demonstrated ability to create sitemaps, user flows, wireframes, page layouts, UI specification deliverables, and designs for handoff to development staff.
Communications Planning and Strategy
Demonstrated ability to take multiple sources of input, combine them into a cohesive package, and deliver prototypes/mockups in a timely manner. Ability to work within existing brand standards to create best possible digital solutions. Ability to assist with the maintenance of a strong visual brand identity and brand personality and serve as a campus resource for questions about the visual brand. Ability to collaborate with IT services and university communications staff to ensure group’s compliance with policies and standards around identity graphics, web content, and online accessibility. Able to independently assess user requirements and recommend the proper solution for small projects and to work collaboratively for medium-sized projects.
Demonstrated ability to leverage advanced features of all relevant content creation systems and technologies. Ability to efficiently create, collaborate, and manage files within content creation and content management tools employed within the communications division. Demonstrated ability to use content creation software to create content for deployment across multiple platforms and media. In depth understanding of design and concepts for applications across digital media, including user centered website design, user interface, mobile applications, and responsive design.

Minimum 3–5 years of professional work experience as a designer.
Demonstrated ability to collaborate with editors, illustrators, photographers, developers, and campus clients/partners.
Understanding and experience in responsive design principles.
Knowledge of design, user interface, and best practices for digital media, including social media, web, mobile apps, and email.
Knowledge of print production and other print processes.
Bachelor’s degree preferred.
UX/ UI & UX/UA conceptual understanding is preferred.
Knowledge of accessibility practices in web design (WCAG 2.1 Level AA) is preferred.
Knowledge of Drupal a plus.
Knowledge of responsive CSS frameworks (such as Bootstrap), PHP , and HTML5 a plus.
Experience with formal and informal usability testing using design prototypes, and responding to results a plus.
Experience with BaseCamp a plus.
Experience in a college or university communications office a plus.
Associates Degree, and a portfolio that demonstrates executed creative communication design.
