Director of Animation

Posted: Apr 26, 2021

Hiker, a highly collaborative, Emmy, Webby, and Telly-award winning creative studio, is seeking a Director of Animation for a range of social impact and brand communications work. Our focus is on using design, production, strategy, and innovation to help our partners tell better stories. Work on a refreshing variety of projects with a diverse, small team of full-time designers, writers, producers, editors, developers, and other animators. Help us create groundbreaking, interdisciplinary, awesome work, and lead your creative world.

This generalist role focuses on ideation and execution of a wide range of animation projects, led by your creative ideas.

Creative Leadership. Hiker's creative model is flat, relying on creative collaboration and team leadership from a group of amazing creatives: our lead interactive designer, our lead branding designer, our senior editor, our director of content, our live action director, and our principal as well as a range of other creatives work together to drive excellence and innovation. This means you are in the driver's seat with your work. The best candidate will have a wide-ranging curiosity about animation and an ability to rapidly ideate against briefs to come up with new solutions (and sometimes old solutions) to help tell better stories and make creative work. Lead and support other animators internally and externally.

2D and 3D Animation. This role is primarily conceiving, directing, and executing animation. Identify and bring in specialists as needed but at a minimum you have extraordinary facility with After Effects and are able to navigate a range of animation styles, from 2D to 2.5D. The best candidates have been working in 3D, too, and have that comfort moving between software as needed. We are a 3DS studio but don't need to be if you prefer Maya or other approaches. We work on tight deadlines, and a tradeoff for seeing your creative move effortlessly to being pitched and sold is that sometimes time can be tight. Not always. But sometimes.

Title Design. Work closely with our Senior Editor, Director of Content, and Producer/Director to design and create animated title sequences for live action projects. Be willing to let your design take a back seat to story when it needs to. Understand how to work with brand standards and integrate with editorial workflows.

Innovation and Interactive. Work closely with our interactive design team to support animation opportunities in interactive design and innovation projects. Be willing to learn new ways to approach work that needs to function in these kinds of delivery spaces (crushed to tiny sizes, low frame rates, and other kinds of challenges that can come with interactive animation).

Work & Culture.
Hiker is a great place to work. We are a low-ego, self-starter, very flat, creative culture that values kindness and hard work. We make some incredibly diverse, interesting work. The most successful Hikers bring a lot of curiosity, ideas, talent, ambition for great work, and humor. We very intentionally work with both commercial brand and social impact partners. Our POV is that nonprofit partners benefit from the pace and creative demands of commercial partners. Commercial partners benefit from the mission-focused messaging of social impact partners. So it's important that you're OK with that.

Recent clients include: Under Armour, Verizon, National Park Service, Chase, Black Teacher Collaborative, Royal Caribbean, American Forests, Ed Hardy, Hewlett-Packard.

Hours, Location & Benefits.
This is a full-time role, with a 10am-6pm workday, rarely late nights or weekends. We are open to asynchronous, milestone-based timing for this role but will require some ability to join ideation sessions on US ET time. International applicants welcome. Fully remote OK (except for some client meetings, events, shoots), or join us in our NYC office in Chelsea when public health allows.

We offer full-time employees 100% of standard health premium paid (sno waiting period!). We also offer dental, vision, commuter benefits, an HSA, and a 401(k) with a 3% match. Everyone starts with three weeks vacation a year. Unlimited personal days.

Qualifications
A stellar portfolio, a friendly, creative approach, a hunger for new ideas, a great work ethic, and a collaborative mindset are the most important qualifications. Please do not apply if you don't rate yourself at the top of the After Effects ladder. We are very open to remote employees for this role, but you are welcome to work in our NYC space in Chelsea periodically or every day, as public health allows. It's a nice space!  Those wishing to work remotely must have access to strong and reliable internet service. English language skills must be very high.

To Apply
Please submit your resume and a cover letter that includes salary requirements, available start date and location you hope to work from. Note to all applicants: we will not consider any applicant who does not submit a portfolio of work. So please do submit a portfolio of work! Send submissions to [email protected] or through Behance.
