Position Summary:

The University of Maryland is seeking a passionate UI designer for the role of director of user experience design. This role will shape our brand's digital future, architect the University's design system and craft compelling user-centric digital brand strategy.


The ideal candidate is equal parts a leader and a practitioner: the idea of building and guiding a creative team excites you, but staying close to the work is equally important and energizing. You can work fast, are able to quickly discern the needs of a project and can handle concept write-ups and presentation decks, turning them into substantial ideas on the fly. You love the art of storytelling and how to craft the perfect story for the project at hand. You are a professional and enthusiastic presenter who knows how to sell ideas through the lens of strategy and creativity.


Applicants are required to submit a portfolio documenting the progression of a website or relevant digital project from initiation through implementation and adherence to 508 standards.


Additionally, graphic design portfolio pieces are strongly recommended and any examples of implemented design systems.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education (include licenses, certifications, etc.):

? Bachelor's degree required


Experience:

? A minimum of eight years of art design experience.

? A minimum of four years of user experience design experience.

? A minimum of two years of art/design director experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

? Excellent presentation skills and comfortable presenting to all levels of stakeholders,

from departmental colleagues to senior leadership.

? Ability to think both strategically and creatively.

? Demonstrated experience in UX or interaction design in all phases of a website's lifecycle.

? Impeccable attention to detail, excellent art direction, and design sensibility.

? Experience with design systems and atomic design principles; including creating reusable, scalable assets that can be shared and adapted.

? Self-motivated, innovative, and possessing the keen ability to collaboratively assess problems and implement solutions.

? Strong desire to mentor designers, developers and content creators.

? Highly organized and able to work on multiple projects simultaneously.

? Experienced with visual design tools such as Figma (preferred), Photoshop, or Sketch


Preferences:

Experience:

? Experience with adhering to 508 compliance standards (WCAGG 2.1).

? Experience with video and animation production.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

? Ability to apply user, business, and client requirements into user flows and information architecture.

? Ability to write and communicate clearly; including drafting requirements and project documentation.

? Passionate about typography.
