Visual Information Specialist, ZA-1084-III (GS-12/13 equivalent)

Using a variety of computer hardware/software, the incumbent designs and produces visual, multimedia products that visually interpret and display complex scientific ideas and concepts in a variety of digital and print formats including websites and webpages, social media graphics, video graphics, brochures, signage/banners, visual identifiers, exhibits, booklets, book covers, event programs, posters and PowerPoint presentations. S/he will work closely with scientific and public affairs staff to develop conceptual approaches for design of digital and print material. The incumbent creates designs that interpret and communicate the subject in ways that add to accompanying text. Uses a variety of sources to research subjects and a variety of graphics and design software to design and produce visual material. S/he will select visual materials such as photographs, illustrations, etc. that will be used in the communication of information, oversees photo shoots, and works as a part of a collaborative team.
This position requires one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level (or ZA-II at NIST) in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience communicating topics via graphic design in both print and on-line formats to the general public.
Applicants MUST submit three (3) graphic design samples that clearly demonstrate the ability to translate complex ideas into easily understood visual communications. Samples will be evaluated for their demonstration of composition, hierachy of information, color theory, and typography selection. One sample MUST be a print piece and one sample MUST be an illustration or infographic designed for the web. If available, please provide the link to the website where the sample is used. Each design sample should be accompanied by a statement about the audience and purpose of the design.
