A leading design-led, central Edinburgh brand seeks an experienced Surface Pattern Designer to join their team. Busy B stationery is carefully designed with thoughtful ideas and gorgeous details to help busy women 'Tame the mayhem of modern life!'  Busy B sell their products directly to consumers via their website and Amazon alongside supplying well-known high street multiples such as John Lewis and Waterstones.


This is an exciting opportunity for a designer with a commercial and creative background, who thrives in a team and has passion and talent in abundance, to play a key role in shaping the future success of Busy B's ranges by creating beautiful patterns and stationery collections that will delight our customers. 


If this sounds like you and you'd like to make a real difference to a growing brand with sales of £3m (circa) we'd love to hear from you. You will ideally be from a pattern design background with a minimum of 3 years of experience designing successful product ranges for a lifestyle brand.   


The main responsibilities are; 

  • Provide strategic input into the future direction and structure of product ranges (alongside product manager) - bi-annual launches; Spring and Autumn
  • Plan ahead to evolve and advance the aesthetic to widen patterns of the Busy B collections and how more choice is incorporated alongside the current ranges
  • Input creatively into business development projects as required ? ie packaging, branding, etc
  • Research ideas and concepts and travel when required to the trade shows and for comp shops to understand competitor brands and up and coming trends
  • Create patterns and graphics /illustrations for covers, packaging, and inside pages in line with brand aesthetic
  • Design new and innovative products and packaging as required
  • Work closely with the Product Manager for day-to-day support and management, attend department meetings
  • Present concepts and designs to other departments at key points in the season, using imagery, CADs, and samples to communicate the progress of ideas
  • Work alongside product manager to develop products; communicating materials, textures, colours, detailing, quality, and finish to our production team for communicating to our suppliers
  • Keep aware of manufacturing techniques and construction to innovate to best margin
  • Produce design artworking schedule to align with the product managers proofreading schedule and the product critical path to ensure all artwork hits deadlines as set out
  • Offer creative input and support to others in the product team and guide freelancers as required
  • Create print-ready artwork and printers notes for product covers, insides, labels, and packaging
  • Work alongside Product Manager and Proofreader checking artwork, blueprints, and samples to ensure accuracy
  • Design bespoke covers for customer products as required
  • Ensure workload is well managed to achieve timelines set by the Critical Path


Key Skills - The successful candidate should have the following:

  • 3-5 years of experience in a similar role working for a comparable brand
  • Experience around ranging and developing collections
  • Excellent knowledge of Adobe CC suite (must be confident using Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign)
  • Experience of art working for print
  • A talented creative designer with a passion for pattern, typography, and design
  • Enthusiastic, good communication skills and a can-do attitude
  • Organised with the ability to work to tight deadlines, and manage own workload
  • Enjoys working in a fast-paced environment as part of a team
  • Able to adapt to different tasks
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Organised and able to multi-task
  • Relevant HND / Degree
  • Product design experience useful but not essential
