Sr. Designer & Illustrator (Print & Digital) - Full Time or Contract

Posted: Jul 14, 2020

We are creating a new category in the consumer goods market that changes the way people think about creating, purchasing and enjoying furniture. Did you know that 9 million tons of furniture go into landfills every year? We think there's a better way. You will be one of the first hires in a fast-growing startup that has been in business for nearly 4 years validating the market and growing a foundation to scale from.

The Sr. Designer & Illustrator will work with our CoFounders/Co-CEO's to create, develop, build and grow all our company collateral, print design, digital design, brand standards and guidelines. This role will leverage our initial brand elements and be the lead design resource for marketing, packaging, corporate identity, digital and related items.

To be successful in this role, you'll have fun creating... creating marketing campaigns... creating customer materials... creating instructions to go in packaging that you designed... creating intros and templates... creating social assets... creating in multiple mediums with a cohesive approach. And when you're done with the initial creation you won't shy away from production work as well.

We are looking for someone that shares a similar passion for the furniture and design industries that we are impacting and helps ensure that we support our customers each and every day.

Essential Functions

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The following is a list of key items required for this role. Additional items may be required based on the needs of the business.

  1. Creator: Proactively create marketing, branding, and related visual assets for all the company's needs. Set the tone for the brand while working with the co-founders and keep in mind that everything we do is for people to make their own furniture; because it means more when you make it.

  2. Design System & Leadership: Bringing experience in design, you'll be able to apply fundamentals of color, typography, contrast, proximity, tone of voice, etc. in creating a design system for our brand. Better yet, along the way you'll be excited to share the "why" behind your design choices with our ever-growing team. And, finally, you'll have been part of growing a team of designers before OR have a desire to do so this time around and are willing to put in the work to be a leader that is respected in our organization.

  3. Furniture & Furnishings: This role will have a passion for the design of furniture, furnishings and related items. This passion will help create designs/materials that connect with our customers.

  4. Print: They say print is dead. Well, some say that. We think that there are missed opportunities with every interaction to make our customer's experience better. From direct mail to package design, media kits to inserts, we are creating all of our products for makers and you will too.

  5. Illustration: From the initiation of a large icon set for our brand to product-specific packaging, customer inserts, title cards for videos, animated graphics and more - illustration will be a key part of this role's success.

  6. Digital: We love print, yes. We're also very aware of the digital age that we live in. With that, it will be critical for this role to keep up with the latest digital design trends and know your way around the front-end of website systems like Shopify, know the normal sizes for google ads and all the major social channels' requirements, create ways to break through the noise for email campaigns and more. This role will not be our lead front-end designer/developer, but will work closely alongside that role. You'll know your way around front-end design and light dev primarily in Shopify and email campaigns.

  7. Corporate ID: We have a foundational brand ID that we're excited about growing; this role will focus on ways to have our brand be present throughout the customer journey in a manner consistent with our marketing and growth strategies.

  8. Sales Presentations: You'll also work closely with the sales team to help create visual presentation templates that can be edited directly by them to grow our sales.

  9. Systems & Software: Initially, aid in the development of company processes for intake requests, collaborate with our Digital Merchandising Manager for PIM/DAM systems, and ultimately take ownership of the process from a creative brief through delivery of the design asset.

  10. Furniture Disruptor: It is important to have familiarity with the homegoods, residential furniture and or commercial furnishings sectors. Familiarity however, should not be a crutch to using the same tactics for selling into the market. We support people and companies that desire to create, design and build their own furniture and you should too.

  11. Contributor & Collaborator: You will be a key member of our go to market (GTM) team's leadership and help create our story, go-to-market strategy, visual representation of our product offering and ultimate value proposition. A strong collaborator that can contribute, decide, take feedback and work in a team-oriented environment towards aggressive goals will do the best in this role.

  12. Product Knowledge: In order to be successful in creating designs for the markets and customer types that we serve, you will be proactive in learning about our product offering and how it compares to the competition.

  1. Excellent illustration and design skills.

  2. Strong communicator that can work across teams/personality types.

  3. Deep knowledge of design processes, approach, challenges, solutions and practical implementation of visual assets to support sales growth.

  4. Flexible, adaptable to change and displays superior peer relationship skills and interpersonal skills with openness to feedback and critique.

  5. Proactive problem solver and contributor to a team environment.

  6. Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite (especially InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator)

  7. An eye for great design and excellent attention to detail.
